Why Repetition Is the Real Secret in Think and Grow Rich: Breaking Down Hill’s 6 Steps to Wealth

"think and grow rich" chapter 4 Jun 01, 2025

“Through repetition of this procedure, you voluntarily create thought habits which are favorable to your efforts to transmute desire into its monetary equivalent.” Page 59 “Think and Grow Rich.”

“Repetition of this procedure” refers to the daily use of auto-suggestion, particularly the act of reading your written statement aloud with emotion and faith. “Favorable to your efforts…” points to the fact that success doesn’t come from one-time inspiration it comes from habitual thinking aligned with your goals. You become what you consistently think about, and repetition is how you plant and grow that mindset.

Let’s examine how each step is designed to build thought habits through repetition, aligning your mind with your financial desires:

Step 1: Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire.

Repeating this specific amount daily embeds a clear target in your subconscious. Over time, it becomes a habitual focus, directing your energy and attention consistently toward achieving it.

Step 2: Determine exactly what you intend to give in return.

By repeating what you’re willing to give, you reinforce the principle of value exchange. It becomes a habitual mindset: I earn by serving or giving something of value. This builds confidence and integrity.

Step 3: Establish a definite date by which you intend to possess the money.

The deadline adds a sense of urgency and makes your desire more real. Repeating this date trains your subconscious to work within a timeline, sharpening your focus and daily actions.

Step 4: Create a definite plan and begin at once.

As you repeat your plan and act on it, your subconscious begins to expect progress and search for opportunities. The habit of thinking in terms of strategy and action becomes second nature.

Step 5: Write a clear, concise statement of your goal, what you will give, the deadline, and the plan.

This written statement is your mental script. Repetition of this script through reading and visualization trains your mind to think only in terms of achieving your goal. It becomes your mental default.

Step 6: Read your statement aloud twice daily, with emotion and belief.

This step is the direct use of repetition to implant belief. Hill makes it clear: Repetition is what builds the thought habits that eventually guide your decisions, habits, and actions toward wealth.

The repetition Hill calls for is how you reprogram your mind, and it's this reprogramming that allows you to “transmute desire into its monetary equivalent.” Success doesn’t start in your wallet, it starts in your thinking, and repetition is how that thinking is built.
