Why Mastery Matters: How to Turn Desire Into Money
Jun 12, 2025“Keep in mind as you follow these principles, that the entire story of how one may convert DESIRE into money cannot be told in one statement. The story will be complete, only when one has MASTERED, ASSIMILATED, and BEGUN TO MAKE USE of all the principles.” Page 78 “Think and Grow Rich.”
Aiden was a 27-year-old real estate agent who wanted to break out of mediocrity. He had read dozens of success books, watched all the motivational videos, and even posted sticky notes on his mirror that read: “I will be a millionaire.” But nothing changed.
One day, he came across Think and Grow Rich. At first, he skimmed through it, focusing only on the popular 6-step plan from Chapter 2. He quickly wrote down a goal: Earn $250,000 in commissions within 12 months. He said it aloud daily. He imagined the income. But after three months, he hadn’t moved the needle. Frustrated, he was ready to give up until he read a line in Chapter 6 that stopped him cold: “The story will be complete, only when one has MASTERED, ASSIMILATED, and BEGUN TO MAKE USE of all the principles.”
Aiden had desire, but not mastery. He had a goal, but not assimilation. And most importantly, he had to make real use of the principles, not just the 6 steps, but the deeper ideas like:
- The power of autosuggestion
- Persistence in the face of failure
- Organized planning
- Faith in oneself
- Creative imagination
- Subconscious influence
- The Master Mind principle
From Reader to Practitioner. Instead of looking for a quick win, Aiden began a new journey, one of practice and integration.
- Mastery:
He didn’t just read the 6 steps — he studied them, journaled about them, and tested each one in real-world situations. For example, when writing his definite goal, he revised it for clarity and emotional impact until it truly moved him. - Assimilation:
He began reading Think and Grow Rich slowly, one chapter per week, reflecting on how each principle showed up in his business. He practiced autosuggestion daily, not just saying affirmations, but speaking them with emotion and belief. - Use:
Aiden started applying creative imagination to generate marketing ideas, used persistence when a big deal fell through, and built a mastermind group with two other realtors for support and accountability.
Hill’s 6-step plan is powerful but only when embedded within the larger framework of his philosophy. Here’s how Aiden’s understanding deepened:
Step 1. Set a specific financial goal. He chose a goal that was both measurable and emotionally compelling.
Step 2. Decide what to give. He crafted irresistible service offers that stood out in his market.
Step 3. Set a deadline. He broke his yearly goal into monthly, weekly, and daily sales targets.
Step 4. Create a plan. He mapped out a lead generation and follow-up system using CRM tools.
Step 5. Write and read statement. He added visuals and emotion to his affirmations for deeper subconscious impact.
Step 6. Repeat with belief. He reinforced his goals through daily routines and weekly mastermind meetings.
Hill warns us: "The story of how to turn desire into money cannot be told in one statement." Why? Because it’s not a “one-and-done” technique. It’s a process of becoming. If you only use part of the system, you get part of the results. Success comes when you master the full philosophy and put it into motion, daily.
