How to Influence Your Subconscious Mind

"think and grow rich" chapter 4 May 30, 2025

“Nature has so built man that he has ABSOLUTE CONTROL over the material which reaches his subconscious mind, through his five senses, although this is not meant to be construed as a statement that man always EXERCISES this control. In the great majority of instances, he does NOT exercise it, which explains why so many people go through life in poverty. Page 58 “Think and Grow Rich.”

Hill argues that every human has the natural ability to choose what thoughts, emotions, and sensory information (sights, sounds, spoken words, etc.) they focus on and allow into the subconscious mind. But most people don’t use this control. Instead, they let external influences (fear, gossip, news, negativity, doubt, failure) dominate their thoughts. These thoughts are absorbed by the subconscious and influence actions, often leading to poverty and failure.

Each of Hill’s six steps is designed to help you consciously control the thoughts that reach your subconscious mind essentially. This is to exercise the control that most people ignore.

Step 1: Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire.

This step forces you to intentionally focus on a specific thought, your financial goal, rather than letting your mind drift into doubt or randomness. You're taking control over your mental focus.

Step 2: Determine what you intend to give in return.

Thinking about what you will contribute redirects your mind from selfish desire to service and value, which generates empowering thoughts. This builds a positive mental image accepted by the subconscious.

Step 3: Establish a definite date.

A deadline creates structure and urgency. By choosing a specific date, you feed your subconscious with clear direction, instead of uncertainty or procrastination.

Step 4: Create a definite plan and begin at once.

Planning and immediate action are conscious efforts. They signal to your subconscious that you are serious. This builds confidence and crowds out fear and indecision.

Step 5: Write a clear, concise statement of your goal, what you will give, the deadline, and your plan.

This written statement becomes your filter for thought. Reading it daily conditions your subconscious with thoughts that you have chosen, rather than those that come from the outside world.

Step 6: Read your statement aloud twice daily with emotion and faith.

This is the core technique for controlling your mental input. Through repetition and emotion, you're deliberately feeding your subconscious with images, beliefs, and emotions that you want it to absorb.

You have total control over what influences your subconscious, but unless you consciously apply the 6 steps, that control is wasted. Most people live reactively, allowing fear, doubt, and external circumstances to dominate their thinking.

The 6 steps are your toolkit for using that control. Directing your senses, thoughts, and emotions toward your goal. Hill is saying: success is not random, it’s the result of taking control of your mind. Poverty is the result of failing to do so.
