How Chapter 9 of Think and Grow Rich Changed My Life: A Personal Story
Jul 02, 2025How chapter 9 of “Think and Grow Rich” changed my life.
Years ago, when nothing in my entrepreneurial journey seemed to work. When every business idea faded and frustration mounted, my mentor Bob Proctor gave me an assignment I’ll never forget.
He told me, “Read Chapter 9 Persistence from “Think and Grow Rich” every single day for 30 days.”
At first, I didn’t understand. I thought, “How could reading the same chapter over and over possibly change my life?” But today, I see it as one of the most pivotal moments in my personal growth and business journey.
This isn’t theory. This is a personal story; one that taught me the real meaning of persistence, and how mastering it became the foundation of everything I’ve achieved since.
The Hard Truth: I looked successful, but I wasn’t truly persistent
Back then, I had what most people would call a successful life. I was working in the nuclear industry, earning over $160,000 a year. On paper, I looked accomplished, smart, disciplined, hardworking.
But something wasn’t right.
I jumped from one business idea to the next, always chasing the “perfect” opportunity. Yet none of them stuck… because I didn’t stick. When results were slow or obstacles appeared, I gave up too easily. I blamed timing, luck, the market, anything but myself.
Then Chapter 9 of “Think and Grow Rich” held up a mirror I couldn’t ignore. Facing the truth: I lacked the habit of persistence
Reading that chapter for 30 days forced me to ask: Did I really have the persistence to build a business, or just the illusion of it? That realization hurt. It bruised my ego. But it also changed everything.
I learned that persistence is not a personality trait, it’s a habit and habits can be built.
That shift in thinking freed me from the trap of procrastination, perfectionism, and jumping ship too early. I stopped waiting for the perfect moment and started showing up daily, even when progress felt slow.
Here are four life-changing truths Chapter 9 revealed to me:
- Persistence is a habit, not a gift.
- Habits are built through daily action.
- Self-honesty is hard, but it’s the only way forward.
- Temporary defeat is not failure — it’s preparation.
This chapter didn’t just teach me about persistence, it trained me to embody it. And once I did, my business and life changed completely.
Over the next few days, I’ll be sharing a breakdown of the 4 specific habits Napoleon Hill outlines in Chapter 9 that build unstoppable persistence. These habits are practical, powerful, and absolutely essential for anyone serious about success. Whether you're building a business, changing careers, or reinventing yourself.
- If you’ve ever struggled to follow through…
- If you’ve ever started strong and faded when it got hard…
- If you’re tired of being stuck in a cycle of restarts…
